How does a film named "Love in the Time of Cholera" get released as a genuine, earnest romantic film?

How does that happen?

I suppose I should be asking how a novel gets released with that name, first of all, but come on. Really? I'm not sure cholera is something most people would reminisce about, let alone associate with romance.

Unless that was their thing.
